The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is a public research university located in Knoxville, Tennessee. The University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus spans 910 acres, stretching from Popular Street along the Tennessee River to the Knox Blount Greenway and from Neyland Drive to Clinch Avenue, though some areas extend beyond. Before signing the rental agreement, check where your classes are held.
Knoxville is made up of 16 different boroughs. The neighborhoods closest to the UTK campus are north of campus and include Marble City, Fort Sanders, downtown Knoxville, and Old City, each running west-east. Many UTK students live in these neighborhoods, all of which are within walking distance of the campus.
Marble City is northwest of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. Apartment complexes in this area that are within walking distance of the UTK campus include The Social Knoxville, Kingston Place Student Condos, and Keystone Condominium. Marble City is also home to several parks, including Tyson Park, John Tarleton Park, and Third Creek Greenway Park.
The Fort Sanders neighborhood is located between Marble City and downtown Knoxville, just north of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. Stretching from Metron Center Way to 11th Street and from Grand Avenue to Cumberland Avenue, Fort Sanders is often referred to as "The Strip." The strip is especially popular among UTK students because the streets of this area are full of restaurants, bars, cafes, bookstores, cinemas and active nightlife. Access to the Strip makes Fort Sanders a popular neighborhood for UTK students and faculty members. Fort Sanders includes a mix of historic homes and more modern apartment buildings. Fort Sanders Manor, The Standard at Knoxville and Aspen Heights Knoxville are apartment complexes in Fort Sanders and within walking distance of campus.
Downtown Knoxville is located on the northeast side of the UTK campus. Downtown stretches from 11th Street to South Central Street and from West Vine Avenue to the Neyland Greenway. There are several apartments available in this area including Woodgrove Apartments, Marble Alley Lofts and Summit Towers. Market Square is also located in downtown Knoxville. Market Square often hosts festivals and concerts, is full of hip bars, restaurants and shops, and the Knoxville Farmers Market is home to fresh produce, baked goods and crafts.
Old City is another option near the UTK campus. Old Town stretches from North Gay Street to James White Parkway and from East Jackson Avenue to Summit Hill Drive. Apartment complexes in this area include JFG Flats and The Daniel on Jackson.
In addition to these neighborhoods, Knoxville has several neighborhoods that are a little further from the UTK campus. Other neighborhoods include West View, West Knoxville, Western Heights, Beaumont, Fourth and Gill and Five Points. These neighborhoods also offer a wide range of housing options for UTK students.

There are many restaurants and dining options available to students in Knoxville. On the University of Tennessee-Knoxville campus itself, students often use meal and meal equivalent funds to purchase food in the dining halls or from the student union. Popular options there include Starbucks, Qdoba, Panda Express, Subway, Einstein Bagels and Chick-fil-A.
Fieldhouse Social is a great place to go for a burger and beer near campus. Most of the other restaurants and bars are located along the Strip. Happy Taco is a Mexican family restaurant with delicious tacos. Chipotle Mexican Grill is another popular choice for those craving something spicy. Stefano's Pizza, Zaxby's Chicken Fingers & Buffalo Wings, Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, McDonald's and Poke Bros are great options for hungry UTK students! All this is located along the Strip.
There are also many restaurants in downtown Knoxville. Cafe 4 serves refined Southern classics, wine, beer and coffee in a casual dining room. Chesapeake's Seafood Restaurants is a seafood restaurant that offers classic East Coast style dishes. Hill Bar and Grill serves burgers and beers in a lively pub atmosphere with music, quiz nights and sports on the big screen. These restaurants are popular with Knoxville residents and UTK students.
Transport
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville offers students free T (Transit) travel. The T runs through the UTK campus and parts of the Fort Sanders neighborhood. The rides are continuous and frequent, to a certain station every 6-12 minutes. There are four permanent routes and two on-demand routes. All services are free.
Students can also use Knoxville Area Transit (KAT). KAT's routes consist of three trolleybus lines and 23 permanent routes serving more than 1,100 bus stops. KAT's three trolley lines serve downtown Knoxville and the UTK area, while KAT's fixed routes provide high-quality transportation throughout the city of Knoxville. UTK also offers evening shuttle services and evening cruises. T:Link is open every evening from 18:00 to 17:00. and 7 a.m. and will transport students to their destinations at night. Students can request the on-demand service through the UTK mobile app or the TransLoc app. Students may also call from any campus blue phone or call T:Link directly (865-974-4080). T:Link serves UTK's main campus, the Ag Campus and the Fort Sanders neighborhood to Grand Avenue. T:Link does not include the Cumberland Avenue lane.
Alternatively, T:bus is available for night traffic. Bus T: runs every 10-12 minutes from 6 p.m. Sunday to Thursday. to 2:30 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 6 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. The T:Bus service area includes the UTK campus and the Fort Sanders neighborhood.
park
UTK students and faculty members must register their vehicles with Parking and Transit Services in order to park on the UTK campus. Registration tags are available free of charge. However, registration alone does not entitle you to parking. In order to park in designated areas on campus, students must obtain parking permits with registration plates.
Types and prices of parking permits vary. Out-of-town parking permits cost nearly $300 per semester, while in-town parking permits are closer to $200 per semester. Fraternity or sorority parking permits cost $269. Students living in on-campus residence halls are considered non-commuters. All other students and teachers are considered passengers.
The UTK campus has three closed garages and eight open garages. Those who do not travel to work can park at any time in the garages provided for students. However, parking is not permitted in student parking lots or the RecSports Parking Lot (RPA) between 3:00 am and 5:00 am. and 6 a.m. except by special permission. Students can park in unreserved spaces for staff and transportation from 5:00 p.m. until 03:00 on weekdays and weekends.
Safety
The University of Tennessee Public Safety Team is dedicated to the safety of the volunteer community. In addition to late night transportation services, UTK also has an alert system and campus security application to improve communication and student safety. The UT ALERT system warns students in case of danger.
In the meantime, students can use the LiveSafe campus security app for easy access to campus resources and services. With LiveSafe, students can make an emergency call to the nearest 911 number, contact UT Police via 911 or text, report incidents or suspicious activity to appropriate campus offices, and access resources such as emergency procedures and safety cards. The LiveSafe app turns smartphones into personal security devices to keep UTK students safe.
Purchase
A variety of grocery stores, grocery stores, and shopping centers are located near the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. There is a Publix supermarket on University Commons, as well as a Kroger east of campus, not far from Marble City. Publix and Kroger are large grocery stores with a wide selection.
Clothing stores such as Urban Outfitters, Nothing Too Fancy and Fizz are located in downtown Knoxville near Market Square. Mast General Store Knoxville and The Market are also in this area.
Several other stores are located a little further from the campus in Marble City. These stores include Western Plaza Mall, Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, Sam's Club, Walmart Supercenter, Walker Springs Plaza, Market Place Shopping Center and more.
